Who are we?

PlayBuild NOLA is a non-profit based in New Orleans. Since late 2012 we’ve been on a mission to transform under-utilized urban spaces into exciting kid-friendly environments for play and learning.

In August 2013, after 8 months of planning we opened our flagship site in Central City at 2828 Thalia Street just off the Claiborne corridor.

In June 2015 with the generous support of a network of in-kind supporters and donors we upgraded our space with a permanent structure to host outdoor play and classroom activities year-round.

What’s our goal?

Our programming and activities are focused on design, architecture, city-planning and related disciplines and are geared to kids 4-12.  Our goal is to engage under-served youth through creativity and active learning and to stimulate curiosity, enthusiasm, and an interest in exploring careers across a wide spectrum of design disciplines.

How are we executing?

PlayBuild comes to life as a community playspace designed for fun as well as learning. Our Thalia Street site houses our “big blue blocks” – the Imagination Playground kit – an architect designed set of life-sized building blocks in addition to a wide array of other construction toys, games, and books. Grounded in the architecturally rich and rapidly transforming Central City neighborhood, we’ve turned a once vacant lot into a creative gathering place for local kids, parents and schools.

School partnerships form the cornerstone of our activity. To-date we have partnered with KIPP Central City Primary, Sylvanie Williams College Prep, Samuel Green Charter, Andrew Wilson Charter, and Bricolage to offer academic enrichment and after school programs. Community and event partnerships support our activities in Central City and in local schools. We produce pop-up play events at local markets and festivals including the French Market, the Palmer Park Arts Market, and at seasonal events in partnership with the Jazz & Heritage Foundation.
